BMW Group has introduced the BMW Hydrogen 7-, a flex-fuel limousine that runs on petrol and hydrogen. It is the world’s first hydrogen-powered luxury sedan. BMW Hydrogen 7 essentially emits only water vapor, and thus reduces emissions. BMW Hydrogen 7, helps in achieving sustainable pollutant free mobility. It is equipped with an internal combustion engine capable of running either on liquid hydrogen or gasoline. BMW Hydrogen 7 uses unique hydrogen combustion technology via a dual-mode drive system. By the flick of a dashboard-mounted switch, the Hydrogen 7 can switch quickly and conveniently from hydrogen fuel to conventional premium gasoline. It has two fuel tanks one for hydrogen and one for petrol. It comes with a 6.0-liter 12-cylinder engine.

Even though hydrogen tanks are very environment friendly they have many drawbacks.

Currently they are only 6 hydrogen filling stations in the world. The hydrogen tank takes eight minutes to fill up and it takes up more storage space than gasoline. The hydrogen tank provides a range of only 124 miles. . The car can drive about 435 miles with both tanks full. Hydrogen in the tank is liquefied and can warm up and boil away within a week if not used after filling it.

BMW has produced 100 of these and 25 will be given free to opinion shapers in United States. Others in Asia and Europe can lease it. BMW hopes to start selling hydrogen-powered 7 Series sedans in the U.S. by 2020 .GM is focusing on Volt an electric car powered by fuel cells that convert hydrogen to electricity.  General Motors Corp.’s has come up with a new hybrid car with plug-in, rechargeable electric-powered Chevrolet Volt. The difference between the other hybrid cars, like Toyota’s Prius or Ford’s Explorer,is that they use a mix of battery power and a conventional gasoline engine to move the wheels of the vehicle, while the Volt runs only on electricity. The Volt has come a long way from the highly noisy electric cars which used to be the norm previously. It has a 40 mile range on batteries and a small gasoline engine that generated electricity which helps in powering the car and recharging the batteries when they are depleted. It has a 640-mile range.
